Forces of the African soul in Brasil. A new album from the original, Brazilian, afrosamba group. Legendary performers reunited here on Brazil's answer to the Buena Vista Social club.

Os Ipanemas recorded their first album in 1962, at a time when Brazilian music was completely changing direction, and just before the first whispers of Bossa Nova had captured the imagination. Against this exciting musical backdrop, Wilson and Neco and a few of their friends got together to record what would be a seminal album, many years ahead of its time. The record was to become a phenomenal success, and greatly influenced the course of Brazilian popular music.

The album grabbed elements from everything that was happening in Brazilian music at the time. In Rio the heavy percussive sambas had developed into the more lyrical samba cancao, predominantly the music of the poor. The main themes being of love and spirituality, repression and sadness. Os Ipanemas blended Samba-cancao, European jazz, and African music as well as incorporating traditional elements from their own backgrounds, singing in Afrobrazilian dialects and using African rhythms and instruments. As it's heartbeat they used the African and samba rhythms which were synonymous with everyday life in Brazil. They achieved a sound, which was a rougher, subverted street version of what would become Bossa Nova in the hands of AC Jobim and Joao Gilberto. And whilst Bossa Nova is known for it's European origins and formal, polished syncopation the Afro sambas were a universal form of music for the people, which the poor and underprivileged could also relate to.

The seminal album was cut in a single session and after it's release the band all pursued separate projects and another album was never recorded. Wilson went on to play with the most important samba and bossa bands of the times, appearing as percussionist with Jorge Ben, Chico Buarque, Caetano Veloso, etc. and studio drummer and percussionist for all the classic labels from Rio Elenco, Philips, Odeon recording.

The long awaited 'Return of...' is the 50th release on Far Out Recordings -- London's only Brazilian Independent label. Joe Davis the London Based producer who heads the label explains : ' I had been collecting Brazilian records since my first trip to Rio when I was 17. When I finally came across a copy of 'Os Ipanemas' album, in'87, I was amazed by it, I couldn't believe it they had never recorded another. I knew Wilson and Neco from my work with other Brazilian musicians, so, 40 years after the first recording, I approached them to do a follow up for my label, using the same themes and feeling of the original'. The result is an atmospheric album of new material rich with the spirit of Africa in Brazil. Playing on the album are Wilson Des Neves, Neco, and Marinho, all members of the original group Os Ipanemas', who were the first to blend elements of the street sound of 'Samba Africano', with the newly emerging bossa nova.

The beauty and power of 'The Return of the Ipanemas' ,lie in its authenticity, the new material recapturing 'the Ipanema's' timeless and groundbreaking sound. It is remarkable, in that it sounds different from anything coming out of Brazil at the moment. Resonating with sunshine, sadness and saudade, it invokes a raw Brazilian feeling, which effortlessly recreates that unique time and place when the first recording was made.
