Steve Coleman - The Tao Of Mad Phat (bass, guitar & piano) - Video
PUBLISHED:  Sep 15, 2010
DESCRIPTION:
Aight this is some of my fave shit right here.

The idea for this video started when I was cuttin' guitars for Grant Nelson, and I got that strat with a floyd with EMG styled pickups, and plugin' it in the board, switchin all the pickups on it NAILED the tone David Gilmore (NOT Gilmour) used in SC and Five Elements (or so I thought).

So I started goofin' around with some strange soundin' abstract stuff, and I felt like playin' my fave SC & Five Elements cut.

I remember my father snatched it when it first came out, like 1993 I think, I was 5, and most of the shit my father had was like 60s era hardbop (wich is badass) but when THIS came out pumpin', I was like, DAMN !! This is hard.

The hardest thing to do on this kinda music to me is playin' freely but rythmically. It's all about rythm and angular movement. It's very funky in a strange abstract way.

And PLEASE if you gonna play that kind o' stuff, don't try and show how well you know where the sequences starts and stop, it's ridiculous and scholar. You never do that in 4/4, so why do it unless you wanna show how a good schoolboy you are ? Just glide along the rythm and express yoself.

Oh yeah one last thang SC is super hip and aware of all this mp3 issue and long story short if you wanna cop most of his great music for free head over to the Mbase website: www.m-base.org

peace y'all
