Anton Strelezki : Romance, Op.70 No. 8 followed by an improvisation - Video
PUBLISHED:  Feb 03, 2011
DESCRIPTION:
I am led to understand that Anton Strelezki (and Stepan Esipoff) are pseudonyms of Arthur Bransby Burnand, born in Edmonton, London in 1858, and died in Lambeth in 1907. However, there seems to be some confusion over this, as per Alan Walker's biography of Liszt, Strelezki was apparently his pupil in 1869 (when he would have been only 11), and Walker gives his real name as Theophilus Burnand. Arthur did have an uncle called John Theophilus Burnand, but he was a City clerk. Clara Schumann also had a friend called Theophilus Burnand with whom she dined in the 1880s. I found this short Romance in an American album of piano solos. I couldn't find anything to partner it with to make a longer video, so I added ( starting at around 1:51 ) a short improvisation on two motifs from the piece. Apologies for the slightly imperfect tuning of the lower registers of my piano, which was affected by an extended dry cold spell.
