One thing you can say about German duo QEK Junior is that a band named after an old DDR caravan must have a sense of humour. Since I caught them at the 2009 Antwerp BIMFest I doubt a week has gone by that I haven't listened to their album Ausverkauf. This is a deceptively addictive experience, really getting under your skin.

Lots of influences from synth pop through old-school pioneers like DAF & Die Krupps, EBM, avant-pop like Tuxedomoon, and the results show in an album with a deceptive range despite using a fairly minimal amount of sounds. The key is to get the right ones, and they've done this - the percussion is similar from track to track and I had to sample it as it's too good to miss out on. This track shows their fascination with old films, the title taken from the (for its time in 1926) amazingly debauched nightclub sequence in Fritz Lang's sf masterpiece Metropolis. At the BIMFest they performed in front of a large-screen projection of Eisenstein's Battleship Potemkin.
