PUBLISHED:  Jun 25, 2015
DESCRIPTION:
Show aired 27 September 1965.
0:00 Intro - McCallum hangs out
2:12 Help!
Musical director Peter Matz presents a jazzed up version of the Beatles song which had just been released the month before this show.
3:52 Beau Brummels - Don't Talk to Strangers
The Beatles were the first "boy band". They were much more than that, of course. So Beatlemanics, don't send me hate mail! Anyway, the mop tops spawned many imitators. This performance appears to be a total lip-sync. Normally the singing on this show was live into a recorded musical tracks.
7:17 Peter & Gordon - Yesterday
- McCartney's famous song had not been released as a single at this point, although it was on the Help! album released in August 1965. Peter did know Paul well because McCartney was dating Jane Asher, Peter's sister and living in the Asher house.
10:35 Brenda Lee - Rusty Bells
- Corrections to David's intro: 1) Brenda is from Lithonia, but was born in Atlanta. 2) Brenda was still only 20 at showtime in Sept 1965, not turning 21 until Dec 11. The record was a hit reaching #3 on the adult chart and #30 in the Cash Box survey.
13:40 - The Animals - We Gotta Get Out of This Place
18:06 - Top of the Pops - Agent Double O Soul, Mohair Sam, Catch Us if You Can
Audio Artifact I
19:20 Brenda holds up both arms, but Gordon Waller forgets to give her an assist from his side. You can hear an audible "Ohh!" when he realizes his goof at 19:27
21:36 - The Animals - Club Au Go-Go
Audio Artifact II
24:18 Eric Burdon sings "Body and Soul babe" looking directly at a dancer(Sheila Forbes). She laughs! Was he making a pass at her?
