Myra Melford, Mary Halvorson, & Miya Masaoka - Video
PUBLISHED:  Jul 11, 2015
DESCRIPTION:
During my week-long residency at the Stone, it felt great to invite two amazing improvisers--Miya Masaoka on koto and Mary Halvorson on electric guitar--to make up some music on the spot. Subscribe for a new music video every week this summer: http://bit.ly/1S8mBVl

One of the things I love to do is to improvise with no plan or written music. I also love to prepare the inside strings so that the piano no longer sounds like a piano. That kind of playing doesn’t make it into all of my music, but I welcome the opportunity to mix that in when it fits the situation.

Here is one of those spontaneous pieces in two parts. On the second part, I’ve put tiny magnets on the strings of the high end of the piano to get that thumb-piano sound.

During late March of this year, I performed a 12-show retrospective at The Stone in NYC, which gave me a chance to revisit many of my projects from the past 25 years.
