Egbert Meyers : The Last To Stand (Austin TX 2004) - Video
PUBLISHED:  Aug 10, 2010
DESCRIPTION:
I met Egbert Meyers in Texas in 2004 at the 4th Mickey Newbury Songwriters Gathering. He's from Holland. His native language is Drents, from the Drenthe province, which has been a sparsely populated farming area since medieval times. Egbert's work in his native tongue has contributed to the survival of the language. His travels to the USA inspired him to translate and sing his songs in English. The late San Francisco radio legend, Ron Lyons, wrote in the liner notes to Egbert's first English release, Bluebonnet Blues, "The journey he took to America inspired him to perform again in English. He has also sung in his own native language of Drents and has produced 3 CDs and appeared many places in Holland, Belgium, and Germany. He also founded the bluegrass and old time, 'The Big Bear Festival', and has played with artists such as Steve Young, Jerry Douglas, Mark O'Connor, Peter Rowan, and Byron Berline. There are no oceans and no continents here. These are songs that if they don't break your heart, they will open it." I have included Egbert's introduction to the performance of The Last To Stand, recorded at the Mickey Newbury Gathering in 2004 in Austin. I should point out that the listeners stood, immediately, to applaud at the conclusion of the song.
