Matt Hannafin, "1 + 1 and Improvisation" -- Live at the Outset Series, Portland, OR - Video
PUBLISHED:  May 14, 2013
DESCRIPTION:
This piece was the fourth of five solo compositions performed by Matt Hannafin at the Creative Music Guild's Outset Series at Revival Drum Shop, Portland, Oregon, on March 6, 2013. It begins from Philip Glass's early composition "1 + 1," though the instrumentation was changed from Glass's intended "amplified tabletop" to the inlaid wooden body of a Persian tombak drum, with the skin head acting as a resonating membrane not too different from the intended amplifying speaker. A little before the four-minute mark, the piece segues into an abstract tombak improvisation, then at the end comes back to "1 + 1" though in a heavily abstracted and non-metrical form. Like the entire set, this is a semi-composed piece that has at its heart two goals: (1) to get the most from limited means, instrumentally and structurally, and (2) to get fully inside the sound of the instruments, putting their inherent acoustical characteristics at the forefront. The set was filmed and produced by Portland Community Media.
