my personal connection with this song was that when i was 18 and starting to stress about being in the public eye with my major-label record coming out, a man i was in love with looked me in the eye and said "let me be your mirror", don't trust that doubting voice in your head (this part i'm paraphrasing). that man was jeff buckley, an amazing artist, who died a year later - a few weeks before my first album was released.

the velvet underground were the original brooklyn hipsters. they had a 'deconstructed' style and a rebellious attitude, and although they often wrote catchy pop songs, they often did something in the performance to make the song less accessible and more 'underground'. in this case, they had nico sing. she was a beautiful german woman with a low, pitch-imperfect style of singing.

lyrics:

I'll be your mirror
Reflect what you are
In case you don't know
I'll be the wind
the rain and the sunset
the light on your door
to show that you're home

When you think the night has seen your mind
That inside you're twisted and unkind
Let me stand to show that you are blind
Please put down your hands
'Cause I see you

I find it hard to believe you don't know
The beauty that you are
But if you don't
Let me be your eyes
A hand in your darkness
So you won't be afraid

When you think the night has seen your mind
That inside you're twisted and unkind
Let me stand to show that you are blind
Please put down your hands
'Cause I see you

I'll be your mirror
I'll be your mirror
