Story Behind The Song 5 - Forcefield

The first song in this series off the new album, Hello Halifax, Forcefield was written on the bottom bunk of a youth hostel bed in Byron Bay. It was the beginning of my troubadour adventure, December 2010, and I'd heard about Byron Bay for years, and now I was finally here but was feeling a bit gloomy. I know! I would put on my favourite t-shirt that an old love had given me years before - almost a rag now but embroidered with thread and multi-coloured stars - and I imagined that it would be a forcefield protecting me from anything - dark spirits, dark moods, barbs and trapdoors. No sooner had I had that thought than my songwriter brain kicked in and thought "that's a good idea for a song", so I sat on my bed and it just slipped out, the chords, the melody, the words, almost the whole thing like one of those births that happen in minutes, the mother left relieved, surprised and happy.

Later that day I would play it to a woman called Ashlee Thompson selling hair wraps outside Fundy's - and it would turn out that not only did she like the song, but she had her own show on Byron FM and wanted me to come and play it live the next day.....The song became part of the soundtrack for my troubadour journey and is one of people's favourite songs of my new album....
