When you've been with someone for a long time, even when you've split up and it's all over, that part of you that has been loving them still loves them, and that part of them still loves you.

I remember driving up the M6, out of London on a road trip to clear my head after breaking up the long-term relationship that filled most of my twenties. Before leaving I walked in the semi-darkness of Hampstead Heath with my close friend Sam. After saying goodbye I sat in my van, in the cold and dark. The heater was gone. It was wet. I had a long drive ahead of me up to Liverpool. I started writing some words. On the way there was a huge storm, the wind blew so hard that at one stage on the motorway I really didn't know whether I'd make it, it felt like the wind was going to blow my van right off the road. When I got to Liverpool - to stay with another friend of mine called Sam as it turned out - I wrote the rest of the song in the afternoon, it just coming out easily. As so often happens with these big songs that come out in turbulent times, I found myself buzzing off the song and singing it out in to the Liverpool sky, enthusing to Sam how big a hit it was going to be, while also obviously filled with emotion and heartache that had created the song.

I just heard from my ex today, out of the blue for the first time in a long time. She lives in India now and has a wonderful partner and beautiful son. She had just found Sweetheart lurking on an old computer somewhere and had listened to it and it had brought back that time. Thank you Heidi - for all the love you gave me. And thank you to all those of you who have connected so deeply with this song too - It has taken on a life far beyond the story behind it, and read a certain way, there is no need for it to be about the end of a relationship at all..which might make several of you who have walked down the aisle to it feel a bit better!
