From 1960, when the well known British blues researcher Paul Oliver undertook his historic field trip thru the US, up to the early 1970s, Country Blues were still going strong. Exciting artists like Skip James, Son House or Bukka White, all of whom had made great records in the 30s and 40s, were rediscovered, and also important new finds like Fred McDowell, Mance Lipscomb and Robert Pete Williams were made. By the early 1970s general interest in the Blues diminished, and it were only established, mostly modern performers who delivered the message of the Blues. During the past couple of years there has been a strikingly small amount of newly recorded Country Blues issued on record. This is probably partly due to the fact that many people believe that there are hardly any good Country Blues performers around today. It was in 1978, on a 6 months’ Blues trip thru the USA, that I found this assumption to be untrue.
I left for the USA again in June 1980, revisiting musicians I had met in 1978 as well as locating new ones, and making arrangements with them to be recorded. My friend Siegfried A.
