It is always heartbreaking when U.S. soldiers die in combat. Unfortunately, family and friends aren't the only ones who suffer. Hawkeye, Jon Tomlinson's loyal dog, would not leave his fallen master.
Loyal Dog Hawkeye Won't Leave Jon Tomlinson, Fallen Navy Seal, at Funeral (Video)While the pain of losing a friend or loved one to war is nearly unbearable, imagine the pain for a dog like Hawkeye who is not even able to reason as humans are. The mourning Labrador Retriever was Tomlinson's "son," and the dog simply laid down with a sigh near the casket at his master's funeral in Rockford, Iowa.
It is absolutely heartbreaking that Jon Tomlinson was one of 38 soldiers who died in Afghanistan when the Chinook helicopter was taken down by enemy fire. Even more unbelievably heartbreaking is the incredible sadness his loyal best friend Hawkeye is obviously experiencing as displayed by the video below. The poor dog just looks devastated. There is no doubt that his family and friends felt the same way.
How do you help a dog through this type of mourning? It must be difficult especially since those left behind are also mourning in a similar manner. Poor Hawkeye. May Jon Tomlinson rest in peace and know that he was greatly loved by his family, friends and dogs. The U.S. is grateful for your service.
