Joan writes, "Since early 2012, I have been writing scores that offer a large, explicit array of interpretive possibilities. Generally, I have provided the performer with enough interpretive liberty, to the extent that the specific qualities of both local and medium-scale structural relations are largely defined—sometimes even accidentally—on stage, during performance. At the same time, it has been my priority to maintain a clear sense of sonic identity across a number of performances of the same piece. This has been achieved by strongly establishing large-scale relations as well as by carefully controlling the potential possibilities offered by the notation.
Perhaps the whole point in all of this is to treat the music as a living being; an entity with ‘whom’ you can interact…"
