Official Reggae Sound Clash: killamanjaro vs Arrows ft John Wayne, Sassafrass, Danny Dread, Lee Van Cliff, Billy Boyo, Jim Kelly, 1982

Killamanjaro sound system has been a leading light in the dancehall world. The sound was started by Papa Jaro in 1969 and it’s name is derived from Africa’s highest mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro, and throughout their history they have constantly scaled great heights both in Jamaica and worldwide.
As Killamanjaro’s set grew in size and popularity they started to recruit deejays with O Lord being their first resident professional mic man. As the seventies made way for the eighties so Killamanjaro marched onwards and upwards. A major plus for the sound occurred when Mr Harper recruited Ainsley Grey as main selector. Sadly we have yet to hear a full Jaro session dated earlier than 1982 but a typical dance around 1982/83 would feature such luminaries as Jim Kelly (b. Sylvester Morgan), the apprentice of O Lord, who by this time had flourished into a great chatter and the sets number one deejay. Other deejays on the scene at this time were veteran Lone Ranger (b. Anthony Waldron), Buro Banton (b. Donovan Spalding), who had two separate stints with the sound, Danny Dread and Dirty Harry. In addition John Wayne (b. Norval Headley) and Papa Tullo aka Tullo T (b. Everald Crawford), who were previously on Studio Mix sound, could often be heard at Jaro dances.
As well as the deejays Killamanjaro also promoted singers around the set. Long time dancehall fixture Puddy Roots (b. Junior Smith), who had started out as a deejay Puddy Lion on the Arrows sound in the mid to late seventies, morphed into a singer who would appear on many of Killamanjaro’s crucial sessions in the early eighties. He would also be joined by U.U. Madoo, a singer with a voice almost indistinguishable to his older brother Madoo. These singers along with others like the sweet voiced Hopeton James and the “original” Thriller were always there to provide an alternative vocal refrain.

Arrows Hi fi International sound system originate Kingston in the mid 1960s. The sound system was aka Bilbo and Robert aka RO. The original entertain and Puddy Lion now better known as Puddy Roots o Ricky Zaggaluu and Papa Screw.
In the Early 80s the Arrows crew got more interesti the addition of new entertainers like Shaka Shamba, the lo Brown, Captain Sinbad, Papa Splint, Boney, Clarence Parks en Chest, Cutty Ranks, Beenie (Beenie man)Arrows. The M Leslie Thunder, Zu-Zu, Major Worries, Scion Success-d Pro International was one of the few sound systems of the cost USA fully equipped , that is an entire sound system with speaker bov amplifiers and the whole works.
One unique style that Arrows was known for was the way the suddenly turn down the bass and turn up the treble." Here you would sweet sound of the top end along with the tweeters. He would then suddenly could hear the baseline and the crowd would erupt with excitement which often ended with a "fahwud." Another unique thing about Arrows Hi Fi was whenever the selector
played part two, you could listen out for part three and even a part four of the same riddim. Arrows International Hi Fi was a real rub-a-dub sound.
It was such a honourable treat to hear all of the Arrows Hi Fi deejays say that Crutches is “my guiding star in the dancehall business. The great Crutches was a foundation deejay on Arrows Hi Fi sound system. Crutches represented Arrows from the days of “Wackie fence skank,” through to the days of “Harbour.. rock.” Along with Puddy Lion and Jah Mikey, he entertained from the 70s the 80s.
