Composer, Jacob Duncan, was born September 26, 1975, in Louisville, Ky. He studied music at Interlochen Arts Academy, University of North Texas. After college, he spent a few years in Brooklyn, NY and played with an eclectic array of musicians. Duncan began the new music, indie, experimental and jazz-influenced Liberation Prophecy ensemble in the winter of 1995, in Louisville, Ky. Duncan expanded the ensemble in Dallas, Texas adding singer, Norah Jones. His compositional approach continued to evolve, as most of the ensemble moved to New York. When Duncan returned to Louisville, the ensemble morphed again with incredible Louisville musicians, and recorded its first album, Last Exit Angel. Seven years later, after another change in line up, the Prophecy recorded it’s second album, Invisible House. His compositional style utilizes forms based on the rhythms of modern culture and society juxtaposed with intimate and lyrical melodic content.

“I’m interested in pretending and expanding upon memories through the use of polytonal and rhythmic musical experiments. I am fascinated by how a memory and time change the self through mindfulness. I have always been inspired by the work of Kurt Weill, Martha Graham, Philip Glass, and Klee. I enjoy the coexistence of distant realities within one framework that lead to seemingly unrelated afterthoughts, tangents, and multiple aural and spiritual perceptions.”


Now in 2015, Duncan is constantly traveling, composing, teaching, touring, improvising, and loving life. Duncan likes to say, “I’m retired,” because he feels he is doing everything he would want to do. Duncan has become a respected composer, through film, arranging for other artists, improvising, horn work on several modern indie rock and classical albums, and collaborating whenever asked. “Just tell me where to set up my instrument,” is his motto.
