We thought this 1968 Norwegian wrap-round cover deserved a a listing of it’s own, not only because it is elusive and the flawless cover is stunningly “Arty” or indeed the “typo” title as “What a Man Can Do”
But mostly because it give us an opportunity to discuss the flipside of that huge club monster “Ain’t Nothing But a House Party”
“What Can a Man Do” has for decades missed out on the NORTHERN SOUL MONSTER status it so obviously deserves. Every note superior Philadelphia Northern Soul, that for me even leaves their stablemate “I’m Not Strong Enough” in the shade.
Long overdue, relentless turntable spins for this beauty will result in only one thing, jostling dance-floors, applause and a recognition that there are still truly great Northern Soul recordings readily available but just having a snooze..
So when a flawless, beautiful and rare example lands on my desk, this is not a chance I’m gonna pass by.. We’ve been singing the praises of the most-neglected but utterly brilliant example of Northern Soul for an age.
