Having cranked out some killer b-lines on his latest solo album, Freekbass is fast becoming recognised as one of the most iconic bass players in modern funk. He is also the first to admit that he is something of a pedalhead, using effects to add new dimensions to his bass sound. 'It's verging on obsession,' he laughs. 'But I think I have it under control.' Freekbass has always had a pretty unconventional bass sound, and in turn has established the bass as an instrument that’s capable of driving the band and commanding the song, rather than merely supporting it. His exploits with Bootsy Collins have also raised his profile. It would seem that the future of funk bass playing is in safe hands.
