Firebox Cajon - A Box Drum with Huge Bass and Resonance - Video
PUBLISHED:  May 18, 2016
DESCRIPTION:
Check out http://www.cajonsmadein.com for a world list of locally made cajons. The 'Firebox Cajon' I make have three unique features: 1. Lexan as the back, the side opposite the tapa; 2. The thick plywood on one side is scooped out producing an additional playing surface and 3. The sound hole is in the shape of a whale tail which also creates a playing surface with a unique sound. The lexan back combined with a bass port on the bottom of the tapa creates a strong resonance with deep bass and clear highs. The open edges of the upper tapa and the loud bass make the cajon easy to play - a single finger striking the tapa along the upper edge produces a clear tone. I have another video which shows how I attach the polycarbonate back, and another video which shows how I construct the snare on/off. The video about attaching the polycarbonate has a detailed description of the design and construction in the written video Description: https://youtu.be/CJaztUnzrgA I hope it helps inspire you to build one! One disadvantage of this design is the weight, the box is much heaver than most cajons.

Recorded with a Shure KSM 44 mic to Reason 8. No enhancements or effects were added in Reason or in Premier.
