Ladies and gents….I am stumped. When I was asked to write a biog for
the man in question I thought it would be an easy gig….How hard could
it be to write a couple of paragraphs about one of my best friends who
also happens to be (much to my bemusement) one of the best DJs I have
ever come across. You know the drill…first got decks, found a gift for
rocking the floor, got residencies, found fame blah blah (yawn) blah.
But you know what? The story (and trust me there is one) needs to be
told properly. I wouldn't forgive myself and this would be one hell of
a boring biog if I did. ….so here goes. I
To get to what makes Corey tick we have to go right to the end of the
story (stay with me here folks…) first.
Its September 22nd 2006 and Corey is for lack of a better word sh***ing it
as he is about to take to the decks in the main room of Ministry of
Sound warming up and closing off for Roger Sanchez. The room is
primed…the atmosphere electric and Corey throws down his first record
and BANG…we're off! Gone is the worry and the doubt and what we have
here is a man who is total control of one of the most impressive DJ
boxes this writer has ever seen in his live. You see this is why we
start the story at the end because it is here…right here that we truly
get that the one space Corey can claim his own is behind the decks
illiciting knowing smiles, creating pleasure and giving happiness to
those that are before him. Everyone has their place in this world….for
my friend…its making people do one of the things that comes most
naturally to them….dance.
Many people have always noticed this about himeven if the
environment can seem a little hostile at first theres something about
his cheeky style, swagger and ultimately his outright talent that wins
fans over.
Take Gatecrasher's Summer Sound System 2002its late in the
afternoon and Corey who is due to play in the Bed tent in a few hours
gets the call"You're on mate!" shouts Russell Pate GC's event
manager."In the Techno tent!so and so DJ hasnt turned and you
need to get on!". Like a trooper and without batting an eyelis, Corey
makes his way over to a stall selling techno records in the festival
grounds and "borrows" their entire techno section charges into the
huge tent and proceeds to not only play what should be a 'filler' set
but thoroughly win over the crowd with a bunch of records he has never
heard off or seen before!
Take yet another nightits a Tuesday night in BED nightclub and
Corey and Sandy Rivera have just about ripped a new a***hole out of
the club for the last hourSandy gets up on the decks lapping up
the attention of the adoring crowd when Corey inhis infinite wisdom
decides to whip sandy's trousers (and boxers) down in one swift move
exposing a WHOLE LOT OF SANDY much to the shock / amusement of the
1500 plus people before him. Now any other person would have got into
obscene amounts of trouble for de-frocking a superstar DJ but Corey
instead got a big huge hug fm the main man (after he put his trousers
back on that is!) and till this day reminds good friends with him.
The stories just go on and on but what is important is Corey's
dedication to the cause is unflapable and is as strong today as it was
when he first laid his hands on some decks some 8 years ago
Its hard to tell how he got there…in all the 8 years after getting his first
decks Corey has played at Gatecrasher, Bed, Gatecrasher Summer Sound
System, Discotheque, Shindig, Hidden, Air and numerous clubs round the
world including Ibiza, Russia and Malta. He has gained countless fans
and broke dozens of records to masses and got props from every DJ
luminary he's come across…think Kenny Dope, Erick Morillo, Armand Van
Helden, Danny Rampling and of course the S-Man himself. How the f**k
is he going to top that?
The natural progression from playing the records he loves is of course
to craft some himself! Three interesting projects come to mind. First
up is his collaborations with Steve Edwards (The voice behind Cassius
and Bob Sinclar) and martin Smith. He is also beavering away in the
studios with two other seperate partnerships namely Adz (he of Kenwood
Studios infamy) and longtime friend and DJ partner Sandy Turnbull.
Collectively all these collaborations have produced and released a
fine amount of quality peak time tunage (check his discography for
more information) signed to various labels and picked up by some
heavyweights. think signings to hed Kandi, CR2, fierce Angles, ATFC,
Warren Clarke and of course the obligatory seal of approval (aka
airplay on .) Pete Tong's Friday night show.
On his own and ever the one to get make the dancefloor his own Corey
is more than just a little known for re-editing and sometimes
bootlegging tunes for maximum dancefloor effect. So do not think
you've over indulged if all of a sudden The
Clash or NWA or even Dolly Parton starts blaring out.
With one hand firmly in the air and an air of cheekiness not seen this
side of a Peter Kay act, Corey has the gall and more importantly the
gift to drop just about anything and do anything.
Who else would be so cheeky as to top off a triumphant set at one of
russia's biggest dance festival by climbing onto the bar to do a
victory dance? did I mention he allegedly also fell and nearly took
out the whole bar?
With what already seems like a lifetime of stories and achievements
behind him, Corey is now poised and ready to take on whatever life
throws at him. I for one know that you have seen nothing yet as time
and time again just when you least expected corey pulls yet another
bunny out of his mythical hat.
My friend. I salute you and you damn sneaker collection!
