BlueGround was founded in 2001 by my little brother Marek and Roman, our manager, friend and passionate lover of American music. They both forged this crazy plan while drinking Pilsner Urquell in a beer joint… let´s start a contemporary country music band! At the time, my brother was a superb flat-picking bluegrass guitarist, had already started pulling tones on a Fender Telecaster, trying to emulate the stylings of Ricky Skaggs and Brad Paisley. At the pub, they actually took a blank receipt from the bartender and started writing names of the first line-up on it. I happened to end up written there as a lead singer.
Back then, BlueGround was a side project for all of us: we worked at other different bands and we just loved what we were doing as a hobby.
Through the years, many musicians have come and gone but the cornerstone musicians of the band have remained and gradually come to the point where we curtailed our other activities and accepted BlueGround as our core project.
We met Klára in 2013 while backing up several country artists (including her) at a local festival. Boy, we had a ball! We liked her talents and energy so much. It didn´t take long and we all agreed to welcome her on board as a full time band member.
Four songs out of six on this album were written by Daryl Keith Norman. There is a great story behind this. A couple of friends from the Czech Republic and I were visiting Nashville back in 2007. We were dining at Logan´s Steak House and we were served by a nice tall guy with a ponytail. Because of our weird accents he knew right away that we were foreigners and so he was twice as nice to us. We explained that we were visiting at the IBMA bluegrass music festival and that we really were into country music. As we talked, he suggested that he was a songwriter and he offered that he´d give us some of his material to work with. Man, being complete strangers for him… hadn´t I heard this line from so many people so many times before? Anyway, we agreed that if we´d come the next evening to Logan´s he´d bring some of his music. I wasn’t holding my breath.
Well lo and behold, the next day, the same waiter presented me with two CDs with original demos, printed lyrics in a neat binder and a strong handshake, saying that we were free to record any of his material if we liked it.
Here it comes, Daryl, we enjoy your songs so much! And there is still so much left for our next albums…
The opening cut on this CD was taken from Caryl Mack Parker. Klára brought it to the band and we liked it from the very first. My brother Marek is with no doubt the most prolific songwriter in the band and his original tune “You Can´t Count On True Love” was also recorded on our last Czech CD. Our friend Lucien Holmes wrote the English lyrics, preserving almost exactly meaning of the Czech original.
This project is only half-way through and more will come soon, so folks, stay tuned for more country music from BlueGround!
