DESCRIPTION:
NPS-NPRO's Supplement was a Dutch radio program presented by Michael Fahres and Co de Kloet.

EEN AVOND MET BRIAN ENO was made up of two four-hour broadcasts, on 14 and 21 June 1999. Brian was in the Netherlands for the Holland Festival where he had an installation, and the orchestral Shutov Assembly was premiered. Some web pages claim that there were two performances of The Shutov Assembly, and although this was the original intention there was actually only a single performance because of a musicians' strike. The VPRO station made the interviews from the programmes available as mp3s and RealAudio streams on its site. The interviews took place at Brian's studio and in Hyde Park (probably on 15 March 1999) and were then reordered and edited together. The second program appeared to be where the interview originally began.

Eventually VPRO's site was redesigned and the Supplement page devoted to this show was erased from Time. The University stepped up to archive the interview.

This recording ends with a song called "Tit For Tat" which Brian composed especially for the programs. Three Koan pieces were played during the first program, which the University's archivist has spliced in for completeness' sake; they were listed on the program's site with the following details (European dating):

Op 14 en 21 juni besteden we uitgebreid aandacht aan muzikant, componist en producer Brian Eno.

Eno werd opgeleid als kunstschilder, maar staat, zowel in de pop- als in de klassieke muziekwereld, bekend als 'schilder met geluid'. Hij is pionier geweest in de muziekstroming Ambient Music, een stijl die soms denigrerend Liftmuziek wordt genoemd, maar die op het artistieke niveau waarop Eno zich beweegt veel meer is.

Behalve bekende stukken van Eno, zoals 'Discreet Music' en 'My life in the bush of ghosts' zijn in de uitzending veel bijzondere, minder bekende werken en producties van deze geluidskunstenaar te horen: een speciale opname van 'Music for Airports' bijvoorbeeld, die door de NPS gemaakt werd op 8 juni jl. in het kader van het Holland Festival 1999. Het ensemble 'Bang on a Can All Stars' voerde Eno's compositie uit op een plek waarvoor het werk bedoeld is: Schiphol Plaza (bekijk het Foto Verslag).

Behalve veel muziek bovendien het interview dat Michael Fahres en Co de Kloet in maart met Eno hadden. Hij vertelt over de zaken die nu hem bezighouden, over zijn sociale engagement en over muziek via Internet. Hij refereert aan architect Christopher Alexander en filosoof Richard Rorty en geeft zijn visie op de (muzikale) toekomst.
