DESCRIPTION:
this is a concert at the aha! new bedford arts festival in massachusetts. our blood drum spirit ensemble, pianist art hirahara, bassist wes brown, saxophonist david bindman, and drummer royal hartigan, is playing royal's arrangement of bronislau kaper's invitation joined to an original piece called dreamfireswaking, about the images we feel during sleep and when half-awake on waking, seemingly real and beyond the real, hopes, memory, and transcendence.

the composition and arrangement are set in a fast duple 11-pulse time cycle, played as 22223 (5 1/2) and, in the piano solo, as a triple feel 3332 (3 2/3), played in both west african and swing styles. the sounds came as images during sleep and waking.

this clip includes the final part of royal's drum solo leading into the coda theme.
