dreamfireswaking invitation saxophone solo - Video
PUBLISHED:  Sep 01, 2014
DESCRIPTION:
this is a concert at the aha! new bedford arts festival in massachusetts. our blood drum spirit ensemble, pianist art hirahara, bassist wes brown, saxophonist david bindman, and drummer royal hartigan, is playing royal's arrangement of bronislau kaper's invitation joined to an original piece called dreamfireswaking, about the images we feel during sleep and when half-awake on waking, seemingly real and beyond the real, hopes, memory, and transcendence.

this piece and arrangement are set in a fast duple 11-pulse time cycle, played as 22223 (5 1/2) and, in the piano solo (please see other video clip at this playlist), as a triple feel 3332 (3 2/3), played in both west african and swing styles. the sounds came as images during sleep and waking.

here david bindman's saxophone solo begins with he, bassist wes brown, and pianist art hirahara playing over the harmonic changes of invitation in an extended time sense, almost rubato, over the drumset foundation of the 11-pulse, 5 1/2 swing time cycle. after one time through the changes, the solo continues over the form in strict 11/8 time.

recorded by weihua zhang in new bedford, massachusetts, usa, on 14 august 2014.
