Nightshade (Something Terrible) - original composition for chamber group - Video
PUBLISHED:  Apr 29, 2009
DESCRIPTION:
This piece is named after a wildflower in the Solanaceae family: deadly nightshade. My original idea was to capture the electrifying atmosphere of a summer night. However, as I was writing it in the winter, I witnessed physical and emotional abuse at work, leading to a dysphoric and foreboding mood. I was gravely troubled by the way people were treated but even more struck by the victims' acceptance and tolerance of abuse. It was truly "something terrible." Therefore the song can be viewed in two ways: as a theme for the positive energy of summer, or as a warning against the darkness of an unhealthy psychology.

Although I do not as yet have a group with whom to perform / record this, I hope that the electronic instruments will provide a good representation of what the piece is supposed to sound like. Each instrument is represented by a different color and shape. The chamber group I had in mind consists of flute, oboe, violin(s), cello(s), harp, piano, and snare drum. The song could easily be transposed for other instruments.
