PUBLISHED:  Feb 10, 2017
DESCRIPTION:
THE GREAT NATHANIEL MAYER WOULD HAVE TURNED 73 TODAY! The raw rockin' soul sound, in-the-red recording style, and wild intensity on these masterpieces express the NY Night Train aesthetic as much as anything ever cut into wax and if you've been coming to the parties over the years, you'll be familiar with all of these as they never stop turning. While these all are all ripped directly from the original 45s, anyone can tell you that no digitized version such as this, or vinyl reproduction, bootleg, etc, comes close to the unusual feel of an authentic Fortune record. But this is the next best thing! Here's an ordered list of DJ Jonathan Toubin's 13 favorite NAY DAWG Fortune sides (1961 - 1966). #7: "DON'T COME BACK" (1964): The B-Side to thee fabulous "A Place I Know," here we find Mayer sans his usual Fabulous Twilights an backed by two credited groups. The Dynamics are the Motor City vocal group who recorded thee canonical and perfect track "Misery" the year before. And The Crescendals are a killer studio band that features longtime Fabulous Twilight and Mayer collaborator Butch Vaden on the skins, legendary Groovesville soul singer, songwriter, and producer Steve Mancha on bass, and Fortune session regular/Hi-Q guitar hero Walter Hamilton. Here we witness Mayer entering his 20s and walking in a new direction...

e parties, this channel is an attempt to stop and focus on one record at a time in hopes to personally learn more about each one and at the same time turn you on to the artists, tracks, labels, etc. I'm just hipping myself to a lot of these records for the first time as well - so you can view this as our journey to learning more about cool old records together! But mostly I hope this music moves you as much as it moves me.

Get your enjoys,
Jonathan Toubin
