STEVE MARTLAND interviewed by Bas Andriessen & SM Band "Horses Of Instruction" may 20 1998 - Video
PUBLISHED:  May 08, 2013
DESCRIPTION:
A few days ago (may 6 2013) composer STEVE MARTLAND died. Much too early: he was only 53!
In may 1998 I was in the fortunate position to organize a concert of his ensemble, THE STEVE MARTLAND BAND, in the theatre I worked at that time (I made programs about contemporary music): O42 in Nijmegen (Holland). The event also gave me the opportunity to interview Steve in front of the audience about his work and thoughts & concepts regarding (his) music/composing. This clip shows a part of that interview that opens with me quoting (Steve's compositionteacher) Louis Andriessen's provocative notes about composing as written on the sleeve of a cd by pupil Steve. I think Steve's answers here offer an insightful and compact representation of how he thought about (composing) music.
After the interviewpart we see Steve's band playing one of his most exciting compositions (I think) called "Horses Of Instruction". The ensemble plays this piece without Steve conducting (as the composer did in all his other pieces).
May Steve rest in peace! His music will live on forever.

Filmed on may 20 1998 in O42 in Nijmegen Holland.
Video/interview: Bas Andriessen (camera by my friend Theo Hoek).
