Focusrite Saffire Pro 40: Results of recording 8 channels of drums - Video
PUBLISHED:  May 15, 2015
DESCRIPTION:
In this video I will demonstrate the actual sound of the Saffire Pro 40 by Focusrite. Both the Saffire and Scarlett serie are equipped with the famous award winning pre amps, which have a very warm and well balanced sound.
* The sound mostly depends on the mics you usen but also the right placement is very essential.

The mics I use are:

4x Sennheiser e604 (toms, snare)
1x AKG D112 (kick)
1x Magnat 10" subwoofer (DIY subkick)
2x sE5 small diaphram condenser (overheads)
1x sE2200a ii large diaphram condenser (tambourine)

My conclusion: The Saffire series are probably the best sounding and affordable interfaces on the market today.

* Most people would recommend programs such as Cubase or Pro Tools to mix with, but I'm still addicted to Adobe Audition CC. Compared most of the other programs, it's pretty simple and easy to use, but with good ears and taste it's really worth giving this a fair shot.
As the credits say, in the 2nd take I only used a couple of multiband compressors on the toms and snare to actually stimulate the attack. I removed some low end around the 200Hz to reduce some resonance in the toms. The inside of the kick was recorded with the AKG D112, which has a midrange boost, so I also added a multiband compressor on that to remove some midrange, which accentuates the higher attack frequencies. In combination with the subkick, which only produces sound around 60Hz, I found this combination actually sweet.
The overheads in the 2nd mix were only edited with some parametric equalizers. I had the bass roll-off turned on as well als the -20dB pad on the mic itself, but in my opition it still picked up to much tom depth. So I removed low frequencies between the 10Hz - 500Hz and added some 12Hz+ to it, to get the stick attack brighter. So not really much going on there.
In the end I put a soft reverb on the snare to add a tiny bit of depth to it.

Cymbal setup:
- 15" Zildjian K Custom Dark crash (hihat top)
- 15" Zildjian A Fast crash (hihat bottom)
- 18" Zildjian K Dark crash thin
- 19" Zildjian K Dark crash thin
- 22" Zildjian K Custom Dark ride

Actually, there's a 14.25" K Custom Hybrid hihat on it's way, so in a short amount of time I'll upload some new videos.

I really do hope this was useful
- Cheers!
