East Van Digital presents our 20th single, Tasen "Slow Them Down".

Tasen represents a new direction for East Van Digital boss Joseph Martin in his studio. After much trial and error in collecting the perfect synths and sequencers for his studio, Tasen sees Martin eschewing software/laptop production in favor of an all hardware/live PA aesthetic. Sitting in a stiff chair, tweaking digital processes via mouse clicks, in a room dimly lit by the flickers of a screen day after day can be a rather uninspiring pursuit, but Martin is on his feet with this one, working the tactile feel of his banks of analog equipment, making the music he feels as he's feeling it, with little regard for what the track should be. It's simply about staying fresh, in the moment.

This reinvigorated passion is clear in the project's debut single. "Slow Them Down" channels an irrepressible joy in its trippy downtempo house, with crisp finger snaps, funky bass, demented bit-crushed and choral vocals, and a surreal guitar melody enhancing its bliss. It's the perfect soundtrack for the adventures of a plucky anime cat or curation in Mark Farina's mushroom jazz, a summery reprieve from ominous grey of a Vancouver winter.

While the original album single was not necessarily intended for your average main stage, EVD has collected four remixes that all take it to different realms of dancefloor ecstasy. Rennie Foster brings it up to the stomping house norm. Kir Mokum turns its lighthearted playfulness into brooding yet frantic dubstep lurch. Riddim Fernandez ramps it up into a rolling jungle backbone melter, and Shamik floats down into the big bass of electro hip-hop paradise.

There's something here to please just about any fan of electronic music, from the weekend warrior to the wallflower head, all stemming from the power of Martin's new groove.
