When Prokofiev came back to Russia, now-then the USSR, he received multiple collaborations, offers and commissions, one of them coming from the Moscow Theatres. The work consisted of incidental music for the play Egyptian Nights, based upon texts of Pushkin, Shakespeare and Bernard Shaw; its plot dealt with Cleopatra, the last ruler of Egypt and her romances with Roman consuls Caesar and Mark Antony.

Cuando Prokofiev volvió a Rusia, por entonces la URSS, recibió múltiples colaboraciones, ofertas y comisiones, una de ellas viniendo por parte de los teatros de Moscú. La obra requería música incidental para el drama Noches de Egipto, basada en textos de Pushkin, Shakespeare y Bernard Shaw; la trama consistía en la vida de Cleopatra, la última faraona de Egipto y sus romances con los cónsules romanos César y Marco Antonio.
