Marcel Wengler's 'Constellations' is a composition that has accompanied conductor Dominik Hackner during the last 40 years of his musical career. He has recorded it on CD and has performed it in concerts numerous times. Although the piece was composed some 35 years ago when Marcel Wengler was conductor of the Saarländisches Zupforchester (Plucked String Orchestra of the Saarland) it strongly influences the contemporary literature for mandolin orchestra. Modern mandolin music is still profiting from the stylistic innovations that started in the Saarland in the 1970s. Thus 'Constellations' remains a central work within 21st century mandolin compositions.

A possible interpretation of the title can be derived from the name of the composition itself : "The word 'constellation' seems to come from the Late Latin term cōnstellātiō, which can be translated as "set of stars" ... A constellation is formally defined as a region of the celestial sphere, with boundaries laid down by the International Astronomical Union (IAU). Marcel Wengler said in an interview: "Metaphorically speaking: I look through binoculars into the sky and I can see thousands of stars and I can hear something, a kind of repeating theme and then I can see the whole thing from a different perspective and the individual stars are in a different position." He adds: "You know, I really spent some time studying astronomy."

Marcel Wenglers Werk 'Konstellationen' ist ein Stück, was den Dirigenten Dominik Hackner seit 40 Jahren stetig begleitet hat. Er hat es schon auf CD aufgenommen und viele Male aufgeführt. Obwohl es schon fast 35 Jahre her ist, dass Marcel Wengler das Saarländische Zupforchester geleitet hat, so sind doch seine Impulse für die Zupfmusik immer noch sehr nachhaltig und die Zupfmusik profitiert auch heute noch von dem Stilwandel, der im Saarland stattgefunden hat in den 1970er Jahren. 'Konstellationen' ist immer noch eines der zentralen Werke der Zupforchesterliteratur.

Eine mögliche Interpretation des Titels ergibt sich aus dem Namen selbst: "Der Begriff 'Konstellation' setzt sich zusammen aus den lateinischen Teilen stella ("Stern") und dem Präfix con ("zusammen"), frei übersetzt "Zusammentreffen von Sternen". ... Als Konstellation wird in der visuellen Astronomie und der astronomischen Phänomenologie die scheinbare Stellung heller Himmelskörper zueinander bezeichnet, wie sie vom Standort eines Beobachters auf der Erde erscheint. Marcel Wengler führt dazu in einem Interview aus: "Bildlich gesprochen: Ich schaue mit einem Fernglass abends in den Himmel und sehe da tausende Sterne leuchten und ich höre was dabei, so eine Art repetetives Thema, was sich wiederholt, und dann sieht man das Ganze aus einer anderen Perspektive und die Punkte der Sterne sind woanders, also man kann vielleicht so einen Raumklang sich vorstellen und ich hab mich auch auch wirklich mit Astronomie befasst."
