MI Audio Super Crunch Box vs JHS Angry Charlie - Video
PUBLISHED:  Feb 14, 2016
DESCRIPTION:
A side-by-side comparison of the MI Audio Super Crunch Box and the JHS Angry Charlie. The Angry Charlie is alleged to be a direct copy of the MI Audio Crunch Box version 1. I have the Super Crunch Box set to comp setting 1, which is supposed to be identical to the gain structure in the original Crunch Box.

Because the Super Crunch Box uses some kind of electrical wizardry to run its internal voltage at 18v despite being supplied with 9v DC, I've opted to run the Angry Charlie at 18v. I do not mess with the tone controls at all on either box -- I've set them to what I feel are the most similar tones between the two (and what is optimal for my amplifier), and I only adjust the gain control so you can hear how similar or dissimilar they may be.

Guitar is a 2011 Gibson Les Paul Traditional Pro. Amp is a 1972 Fender Twin Reverb converted to 1965 spec, run through an Avatar bluesbreaker-style 2x12 cabinet loaded with Celestion Alnico Golds. These are amp-in-a-box type pedals, so I am not driving the amp very hard, nor do I have the volume turned up.

All four riffs/licks were pre-recorded onto a looper, and then played through each pedal so as to remove any subtle variations that may arise from playing the riff live -- plus, it frees up my hands to fiddle with the gain control.
