DESCRIPTION:
The duet starts with concise, pointed microscopic elements, which presented in short glissando notes and short scales figure gesture. They spread into two instruments, alternately appear in dialogue and compound like a single voice. The direction is based on variations of the gesture, varied in changes of register, instrumentation and emphatic fragments. It results like a kaleidoscope, which creates an endless variety of patterns of reflection.
The middle section is like a cadenza for both. The gestures are desperate from the beginning and the end section. Obviously the clarinet has a bunch of long sustained multiphonic notes. The timpani amplify the overtones of the clarinet, vibrate and then fade out. - Lok-yin Tang
