When I went through U.S. Army Basic Training at Fort Benning, GA back in 1998, there was a phrase that the Drill Sergeants repeated over and over again: "stay alert, stay alive." Years later, I found myself repeating that phrase to my own Soldiers as a squad leader serving in Iraq, and it gave me the idea for the song.
