Bud Carroll's been around, and he's been around as long as most, considering the 28 year old started gigging in bars at 12. Once a teen "phenom". Bud won numerous blues competitions before he'd even begun to shave (he'd later find this to be a bad idea).
Ten years later while looking for an excuse to quit college, Bud joined American Minor and shortly afterward signed a contract with Jive Records (he'd later find this to be a bad idea as well). Records produced by Jay Bennett of Wilco and Christopher Thorn and Brad Smith of Blind Melon promptly resulted in the band being declared newly minted "critics' darlings". Unfortunately, opening spots for Tom Petty, Allman Brothers, Drive By Truckers, Blues Traveler and Gov't Mule, along with 30,000 records sold, didn't prevent the band from being dropped during a transition period at the label. Unfazed by this seemingly dismal outcome, Bud formed the Southern Souls (which he found to be a good idea indeed) and resumed churning out critically acclaimed material, as well as headlining numerous shows across the East Coast. Fresh from a standing ovation on NPR's Mountain Stage, Bud Carroll and the Southern Souls now look to take their intense live show to the masses.
So, what do they sound like? Blues, Funk, Jazz, Gospel, Dirty Rock and Roll, Elvis Costello; that's what they're into and that's what they sound like, sometimes. Other times they sound different. You should probably go and see them for yourself, because you just might like them a lot.
