Lyrics inspired by Chapter 12.2: The Virtues from The Elements of Moral Philosophy 7th edition by James and Stuart Rachels.

Virtue a habitual action
Virtue a character trait
Benevolence civility compassion and patience
Virtues are something good for everyone to have

Courage, a military virtue
The golden mean between cowardice and foolhardiness
Kind deeds are difficult to do
Courage is what will get us through
But be careful about your cause
For courage to achieve an evil deed is no virtue at all

Virtue a habitual action
Virtue a character trait
Self-discipline tactfulness prudence and justice
Virtues are something good for everyone to have

Generosity, giving yourself to others
The mean between stinginess and extravagance
Give your time knowledge or money to enrich the lives of others
But how much should you give before you end up destitute?
You should be generous but you should be reasonable too

Virtue a habitual action
Virtue a character trait
Dependability moderation industriousness tolerance
Virtues are something good for everyone to have

Honesty, those who do not lie
Build relationships based on respect and trust
Be careful of white lies and deception
Only use them if you must
Because virtues can conflict
The virtuous man may have to lie to save a life
But this does not mean he is a dishonest person

Virtue a habitual action
Virtue a character trait
Friendliness, and fairness, thoughtfulness, and self-reliance
Virtues are something good for everyone to have

Loyalty to friends and family
Something no one would choose to be without
The ultimate quality of friendship
Loyal friends stick together and affirm our worth as people
But don’t deny your duties to others
Strangers might not require loyalty but other virtues still apply

Virtue a habitual action
Virtue a character trait
Courage generosity honesty loyalty
Virtues are something good for everyone to have
