Darryl Monroe with Gregg Miller "Monterey" {Buckley, Beckett} - Video

DESCRIPTION:
Early in 2012 , my friends Gregg and Thia Miller came out to visit me here in Salton City , while he was here I mentioned I always wanted to cover a Tim Buckley song ....mainly to see if I could hit anywhere near the ballpark vocal wise ... "Monterey" was on the shortlist, along with "Lorca" and "Down By The Borderline" ..."Monterey" seemed the most doable ...big problem however, although I play drums on all my solo pieces, my drum skills were not good enough to do "Monterey" justice... Gregg had been playing drums for 40 or 50 years and was up to the task ... We didn't simultaneously lay down tracks , but he went into the drum room and I recorded about 10 minutes of him playing "Monterey" type drums.... almost jazz drumming actually..... Well, a lot of stuff happened between now and then and other factors about the song ....mainly whether I could pull it off ...got it pushed to the back burner.... Gregg and his wife passed over to the other side last June {2013} A devastating loss... I decided to finish the song as a tribute to my friend , I , of course , regret not finishing it up while Gregg was around to hear it .... as far as the final product , of course it is not as good as the original , there will likely never be another Tim Buckley but that said, I don't feel I embarrassed myself either...I might not of hit the same zip code as the Buckley , but I feel I hit the same area code....my whole deal as a musician and hopefully as a human being is constant evolving growth ... I love writing and recording original material and will continue to do so but I also like choose cover material that will challenge me , this song and "Jenny Lee" challenged me to sing , just as "7 and 7 is" challenged my drum playing skills .....thank you and thanks for watching...
