DESCRIPTION:
Pueblo Bonito, considered to be "the center of the Chacoan world," is the largest of the great houses in Chaco Culture National Historic Park http://www.nps.gov/chcu/planyourvisit/pueblo-bonito.htm Ancient Pueblo people built this enormous complex covering 2 acres, 4 stories high, with 650 to 800 rooms, 32 kivas and 3 great kivas, from 850 CE to 1150 CE. Theories vary on the population of Pueblo Bonito, but the lack of hearths in most of the rooms suggest that a small population of people inhabited the pueblo year round and hundreds, perhaps thousands of people travelled to Chaco and Pueblo Bonito for seasonal rituals.
This video was taken approximately 100 ft above Bonito, near the Pueblo Bonito overlook on Chaco Mesa. Following torrential rain in Jan., 1941, a portion of the canyon wall known as "Threatening Rock," weighing approximately 30 tons, collapsed on Bonito, destroying a portion of the rear wall and a number of rooms.
