PUBLISHED:  Jan 01, 2016
DESCRIPTION:
Starting on January 1, 2016, on the first of every month, Bob Mann will be uploading a new folk remix track on his Soundcloud (@bobmannmusic). The song will also be available for free download on his website www.bobmannmusic.ca . The first of the series is a track called "Jarde Bin Marda (Flying Panchi Remix)" featuring vocals by the legendary duet, Ranjit Kaur and Mohd. Sadiq.

Bob owes it to obscure bedroom DJ mixtapes and the 90’s Bhangra scene for connecting him to folk Punjabi music. Listening to songs that were remakes of the originals, and then being pointed to his father’s record collection, to dig through and find the originals. This led him to listening to and developing an appreciation for the actual original folk songs. Bob Mann, a father of 2, has been persistently trying keep his kids connected to the culture of Punjab, so they don’t need to go searching on their own when they hit their adult lives. From this, Project:NH95 was born.

Bob Mann has the following to say about Project:NH95

“Music is one of the main attributes of any culture. It embodies certain sounds, feelings, as well as the language. If you can appreciate the music, you can easily learn and connect with the language. Although I credit my parents for passing on Punjabi to us, it was the music that kept me interested, and I want to do the same for my kids. They will listen to contemporary Punjabi music, but want me to turn off the classics. I thought back to what it was that attracted me to folk Punjabi music, and honestly, it was the cover songs and remixes; and then curiosity, to listen to what the original sounded like, how things have changed and what the new artist did differently. From this, Project:NH95 was born.”

What is Project:NH95?

It's a new musical journey for Bob Mann. The name comes from National Highway 95, which runs across Punjab, from Kharar (near Chandigarh) to Ferozepur, going through major cities such as Ludhiana, Mullanpur, Jagraon and Moga, as well as through Chaukiman, Bob Mann’s village. The goal of this project is to connect people to the original folk music of Punjab. Whenever possible, a link to iTunes or Google music of the original version will be included. We encourage you to listen to what the original sounded like, and explore other songs by those artists.

Keep Punjabi folk music alive!
