Artist/Band: Black Henbane

Released: 2010

Black Henbane is a one-man band. The name refers to a plant (Hyoscyamus niger in Latin) which has been used by medieval witches for many purposes, because of its remarkable properties. It is not only beautiful to look at and very poisonous, but also said to have healing, aphrodising and hallucinogenic effects - all qualities that also make up a good pop song.

A scientist by brain and an artist by heart, Black Henbane worked in various jobs, lived abroad, travelled a lot, made some dreams come true - and many mistakes to learn from. He's been playing music solo or in short-lived band projects since the 90s before he started recording and publishing his songs.

Black Henbane's song-writing is influenced by masters as Leonard Cohen, Nick Cave, Gary Brooker, Ray Davies, and The Beatles, but he also likes borrowing melodical elements and harmonies from English, Celtic, Jewish or Gypsy folk as well as from early and medieval music. Another characteristic is the frequent use of exotic percussion instead of conventional drums.

Lyrics
Oh why So shy? I ain't no cannibal! I'm just some guy Whose coat and shoes are soaking wet, Whose hands are cold, whose nose is red. Do you really wanna leave me standing outside in the rain, With my umbrella torn to pieces by the storm? I know your gentle heart is able to show sympathy, I know your kitchen's dry and warm. It's 2 a. m., I'll leave at 3, After some conversation over tea.

"The Gold Rush" (1925) is the quintessential Chaplin/Little Tramp film, with a balance of slapstick comedy and pantomime, social satire, and emotional and dramatic moments of tenderness. It was Chaplin's own personal favorite film, that showcases the classic Tramp character (referred to as "The Little Fellow" in the re-release version) as a romantic idealist and lone gold prospector at the turn of the century, with his cane, derby, distinctive walk, tight shabby suit, and mustache.
