ADORABLE, The Drifters, Atlantic #1078 1955
Flipside: STEAMBOAT -- Here is another great uncharted song from my collection. The Drifters were organized in 1953 by Clyde McPhatter. They had numerous personnel changes through the years including having 12 different lead singers. Their most known lead singers were Clyde McPhatter, Ben E. King, Rudy Lewis, Charlie Thomas and Johnny Moore, who is singing lead on ADORABLE. ADORABLE was written by The Platters' icon Buck Ram and was also recorded in 1955 by The Colts on Mambo #112.

The big transition for The Drifters was in June, 1958 when George Treadwell, the owner of the name "The Drifters," fired all the current members and hired The Crowns/Five Crowns. As told to me as of this upload on YouTube by my dear friend, Ben E. King, the Crowns' members who became The Drifters were "me, I changed my name from Benjamin Earl Nelson to Ben E. King, Charlie Thomas, "Papa" Clark, Dock Green and Elsbeary Hobbs. The years I had with The Drifters were the BEST years!"

Despite all the group member changes through the years, The Drifters had 34 songs charted nationally on Billboard. Their only #1 song was SAVE THE LAST DANCE FOR ME with Ben E. King singing lead. It charted in November, 1960 for 18 weeks and stayed #1 for 3 weeks!
