A word about the lyrics: The people who do this work--rescuing pit bulls--take it very seriously. They rightfully desire that all representations be accurate and to the benefit of the creatures they love. With that in mind, I expect to receive handful of e-mails regarding the line: "She's good with a tranquilizer dart." (My friend and passionate animal activist Jeff Fleiss advised me on this.) I welcome such e-mails; for I have much to learn about methods and philosophies in pit bull rescue.
I gave consideration to replacing the line. But in the end, I am first and foremost a songwriter, and I can't resist a clever payoff rhyme.
In addition, I met some folks who rescue Pit Bulls abandoned in the desert wilderness; a tranquilizer dart is sometimes the only way to save them.
Furthermore: The line refers to using a tranquilizer dart on the bad boyfriend, rather than a naughty canine. And we all know, violence against bad boyfriends is perfectly acceptable in the world of humorous songwriting (Just ask Earl of the Dixie Chicks.)
I offer the lyrics here:
Let me introduce you to a special kind of gal,
Who likes her fellow man, but she loves her canine pals.
She's been takin' in poor strays since she was old enough to ride a bike,
Her motto is: She ain't never met a pit bull she didn't like.
Pit Bull Rescue Woman, she ain't for the faint of heart.
You can't hold her down on a leash, 'cause her bite's worse than her bark.
You can't tell her what to do, she'll just throw you out in the yard.
Pit Bull Rescue Woman, she's stubborn, strong and smart.
Last year I went a courtin' with a gal from the local shelter.
Everything was going alright, 'til it all went helter skelter.
It wasn't anything I'd done.
It wasn't anything she said.
It was thirteen barking Pitbulls, jumping up on the bed
Pit Bull Rescue Woman, she ain't for the faint of heart.
She hardly ever sleeps, 'cause she's always on her guard.
So you better watch your step, 'cause she's good with a tranquilizer dart.
Pit Bull Rescue Woman, she's stubborn strong and smart.
When I saw this gal on the poster, I just had to volunteer.
Anything to get a little closer, so I faced my canine fears.
I thought I was doing pretty good, and soon I'd be endeared.
But I fell right off her radar, every time those dogs appeared.
Pit Bull Rescue Woman, she ain't for the faint of heart.
Flowers, cards, and love songs won't get you very far.
You won't find her in the chat rooms. You won't meet her in a singles bar.
She's a Pit Bull Rescue Woman, she's stubborn, strong and smart.
She's a Pit Bull Rescue Woman. So make sure before you start.
'Cause if you don't love her pit bulls, there ain't no way to her heart.
Saving the world one dog at a time, yes that's her art.
She's a Pit Bull Rescue woman, she ain't for the faint of heart.
