Memories (Radio Zulu 1989) | Trinity - Uthongathi School - Video
PUBLISHED:  Jan 23, 2014
DESCRIPTION:
Rock on in peace brother ~ Sizwe Shabalala 22 June 1973 - 5 January 2017. Sizwe was an amazingly talented, funny, intelligent, creative, musical, loving, kind, generous human being.

It was a privilege to have called him a friend and I miss him everyday. Shortly before he was murdered, we were planning to reunite and share the thing we both loved, performing and creating music.

I first met Sizwe at Uthongathi School in 1987. What an amazing experience for all the children of different colours and backgrounds to be able to learn together in school.

Hard to imagine but back in 1987 multi racial equal schooling was against the law. The spirit and ethos of Uthongathi School will live on forever through the hearts and minds of the founders, the teachers and the students.

Our radio debut back in 1989 on Radio Zulu. Sizwe's father Sam Shabalala was a radio producer at the SABC studios in Durban and he organised a recording session for the three of us.
We were so nervous and overwhelmed by the hugeness of the studio. Sound booth up there and Ben had to play in the drum room and we couldn't see each other. + add the cans for recording - all a first for us.

Thanks for the memories! :) Musicians: Drums: Ben Voss, Vox/Keyboard: Sizwe Shabalala, Vox/Guitar: Patrick O'Shea
