What do you do when your partner works away, and every time you get back together - things seem a little colder? The character in this song decides on a very common strategy - trying to deny the truth, in an attempt to delay the break-up and avoid the inevitable pain.

This was just recorded as a quick 'demo'. I was feeling a bit 'fluey' and that only seems to have added to the sense of desperation in the lyric.

That Same Old Line (Waitin' On A Train) Words & music © Stuart Fretwell 2009

I'm waitin' on your train, again
I know, like always, you'll explain
How you should'a took the shuttle,
Into New York, overnight.

The Greyhound would've been too slow
Struggling home, through all this snow,
But, somehow, waitin' here . . .
Just makes me sadder.

It's the fifteeth time, this year, you've said
That Pittsburgh makes you feel I'm dead.
If that's the case, then why do you keep
Playing this same game?

Sometimes, I just can't explain
The way I feel . . . you cause me pain
But somehow I'm too scared to turn away

I know that when I see your face
And I feel your warm embrace
My heart will melt
And this is what I'll say

I'll just . .

'Thank-you' . . .for all your love
And thank-you . . .dear God, above
For bringing me an Angel, in disguise,

Thank-you . . . in a hundred ways
Thank-you . . . for these Autumn days
I'll thank you . .'til the very end of time

But I'll still cry . . . .I'll still cry
I'll cry . . oh, how, I will cry

Cos, you are my 'everything'
My joy and laughter when I think . . .
That darkness is still deep-inside
My h-e-a-r-t.

Whatever would I do, if you weren't here . . . ? X2

And, so, I'll dry my tears and say
That you must never go away
When, inside, I still know
That I'm just dreaming . .

But, one day, we may see the sun
No more partings, and we'll come . .
Together, here,
Forever and a day

And I'll still say . . I'll still say
I'll say. . . oh, yes, I will say . .

Say . .
Thank-you . . .for all your love
Thank-you . . . dear God, above
For bringing me an Angel, in disguise,

Thank-you . . . in a hundred ways
Oh, thank-you . . .for all these days
I'll thank you . . . 'til the very end of time

'Cos you are mine . . .
You are mine
We'll be fine . .
Away-on, down the line . .

(instrumental break)

Repeat Verses 1& 2, then:
Somehow, waitin' here . . .
Just makes me sadder.

(instrumental break to end)

Techie stuff: Recorded 'live' using my 1970s Yamaha fg150, fitted with light-gauge Martin strings. Input into Garageband on an iMac g4.
I boosted the 'mids' and put on loads of compression, to try to reproduce the sound of a tinny, late 1950's transistor- radio.
