Waffles - Hankuri - Video
PUBLISHED:  Jun 01, 2016
DESCRIPTION:
We love Waffles. Not the toasted variety, although covered in bacon and syrup they are the tastiest way to a coronary. No, we're talking about the delicious re-edits label that popped up last year and has been delivering heat in the shape of three EP releases. Origins of the label aren't clear, but the tracks have seen rotation on the Despacio sound system, so we're guessing it might have something to do with the Dewaele brothers of Soulwax. As with both previous releases, Waffles 003 contains two tracks with one on each side (well you can't have more than two sides on a waffle, can you). We chose the A side Hankuri (coffee bean side up) of the two as our pick. It reshapes a Nigerian afrobeat track of the same name by Mad Man Jaga, which was dug up from the 1970's by Soundway and featured in a compilation released in 2010. The melody and groove are given more strength, adding claps, bigger snares, synth flecks and bringing the funk guitar and bass to the front. The vocal, quite rightly remains a major focus but is chopped down slightly and instrumental sections are removed to make this a tight little number....Enough of the waffle, time to tuck in!
