DESCRIPTION:
On Day 2 of University Sport South Africa (USSA) Hockey Week, defending champions University of Johannesburg faced Stellenbosch University (Maties) in Pool A. Maties, still smarting from a 1st round defeat against University of Pretoria, needed to win this match to get their campaign back on track in order to make the semifinals in a very tight pool. With the stakes being so high, it was always going to be a bruising, ill-tempered affair. UJ allowed Maties to get under their skin, who successfully managed to break up their playing rhythm. UJ were also guilty of not converting their scoring opportunities, and ill-discipline led to ill-timed visits to the sin bin. Maties won 2-0, and this result ultimately was seal the fate of UJ in the competition.
