DESCRIPTION: Poropiti: Prophet uses physical-theatre, choreography and live music to depict the life of T.W Ratana – the Māori faith healer, political reformer and founder of the Ratana Church. In 1924 Ratana travelled with a party of 38 Māori to London, New York, Geneva and Japan to present a petition regarding land confiscations to King George V. This two person show brings Tola Newberry (Paa Boys) and the acclaimed voice and musical presence of Mara TK into challenging multi-disciplinary roles on stage; roles that evoke the surreal and avant grade as well as deep aspects from the their own indigenous history.
