River Song
© 2014 Tracy Grammer
I wanted to write you a river song
As true as the blue Mojave is long
As red as the rock on the Arizona side
Under a sundown sky
Thought I should sing you a desert tale
As bright as the lightning, as sharp as the shale
As earthy as sage on the bare, arid plain
Following the first kiss of rain
But it's a long, long way
Into to the heart of the matter, I'd say
Somewhere a deep, deep well
Swallowed the secrets I wish I could tell
Maybe I'll read you a mountain scene
As bleak as the brake growing wild in between
As full of relief as the cactus in bloom
Under a midnight moon
It is a long, long dream
Picking up mystery, gathering steam
I've got a cold, cold eye
Blinking back tears that I wish I could cry
Someday I'll show you my secret cove
A shaded trailer in a cottonwood grove
The soft seat of mercy, the blank check of fear
All of it written right here
But that's a long, long way
Would anyone hear me if I learned to pray
Somewhere in a hard, hard stone
The imprint of something I wish I had known
Wish I had not thrown
Wish I had known
