daddy was the handshake man
and mother sewed the goods
i worked for them in the summertime
just like a daughter should
bagging up those pillows, and the blankets and the sheets
we made everything a little baby needs

daddy was the handshake man and sherry was the girl
she typed and filed the invoices and organized the world
once a year the salesmen came to celebrate and dine
they'd kiss her hand and stand around and shine

she had giant glasses, frizzy hair
it was strange to see them linger
she seemed neither fine nor fair to me
but at ten i did not understand the kinds of things that drew a man
and dreamed that one day one might notice me
so i kept my eye on sherry

daddy was the handshake man but mama turned the gears
efficient and intelligent and wise beyond her years
but every time the salesmen came to gather and review
they just shook her hand like salesmen always do

she had perfect makeup, pretty hair
it was strange they did not linger
she seemed like a shining star to me
at ten i did not understand the kinds of things that scare a man
still someday i hoped they'd notice me
so i kept my eye on sherry

sherry laughs like tiny bells
her blue eyes hint of i-wont-tell
virginia slim in her fingertips
and daddy's hand upon her hip

at ten i did not understand the kinds of things that draw a man
but daddy, you should know i'm noticing
and i've got my eye on sherry

daddy was the handshake man and mother sewed the goods
i worked for them each summer like i thought a daughter should
