DESCRIPTION:
The annual Tony Williams Scholarship Jazz Festival in Philadelphia has as its namesake a jazz elder, a saxophonist who many expect to be a DRUMMER. No, this Tony Williams is not the late, great percussionist of the same name.

This clip with Terell Stafford on trumpet and Tim Warfield on tenor saxophone is from the festival in the year 2000. Both of those young lions have since gone on to great things in the world of jazz. "He also had a passion to 'keep jazz alive' so it was not enough for Tony just to be a professional musician. He had to give back and he did that in a way that can not be matched by many. Tony Williams started a jazz theory and music program in his school, the Ada H. Lewis Middle School Jazz Band. Not long after, he started his own jazz theory and music program that is now known as the Mount Airy Cultural Center, Inc., of which he is the founder and director."

This festival is an annual event which has taken place in Philadelphia every year since 1990. The upcoming dates are Friday August 29 through Monday September 1, 2014 (Labor Day weekend) .
